Vanissa is a composer and curator interesting in interdisciplinary art practices. Started out as a pianist she studied piano with Chinese composer Mr. Cui Shiguang. Vanissa turned her focus towards electroacoustic music composition when she was working on her master degree at Ball State University, Indiana, US. Vanissa’s pieces and installations have been premiered and exhibited internationally at various events and festivals including the Munich Biennale 2018, the 13th International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (Seoul, Korea), Zvukové Dobrodružství (Brno, Czech), Society of Composers (SCI) Region VI Conference (Texas, US), University of Central Missouri New Music Festival (Missouri, US), the soundSCAPE festival (Italy), 2013 International Workshop on Computer Music and Audio Technology (Taipei) and Hong Kong Arts Festival. Vanissa returned to Hong Kong in 2010 and obtained her PhD in 2017 under the supervision of Prof Christopher Keyes. She also studied voice with Ms Katusha Tsui-Fraser (HK) and Dr Mei Zhong (US). Vanissa was the winner of the regional (Indiana) audition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing in US in 2008.
Vanissa was granted the Fulbright Research Scholar Award by the US Department of State in May 2014 and was sponsored to do a 10-month research at Louisiana Digital Media Centre in 2014-15. Upon her return Vanissa was lecturing on interdisciplinary art and arts technology University of Hong Kong, and City University of Hong Kong School of Creative Media. Vanissa relocated to Northern Ireland in June 2021 and is currently working, as a visiting scholar, on a sound art performance project at Sonic Art Research Centre in Queen’s University Belfast, which is funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
